Couples & Family Counseling

Couples counseling provides a supportive environment for partners to work through relationship challenges and improve communication, as well as difficult topics such as physical intimacy, betrayal, and shared or individual trauma. Questions About Therapy?

  • Each therapy session is tailored to the client's goals. Therapists often ask clients what they hope to achieve. Therapy can be short-term, addressing specific issues, or long-term, focusing on growth and development. For therapy to be effective, clients must be actively engaged and willing to take responsibility and embrace change.

  • People seek therapy for various reasons, such as addressing ongoing psychological issues, coping with life changes (e.g., divorce or job loss), or pursuing personal growth. Finding a therapist who provides support, insight, and strategies can help navigate life's challenges. A good therapist creates a safe, non-judgmental space where clients can express their feelings and fears. While therapy can be difficult, the goal is to promote growth and positive change.

  • Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR), developed by Francine Shapiro in 1987, uses bilateral stimulation (like eye movement) to help process "stuck" memories. Based on the Adaptive Information Processing model, it is a non-invasive therapy that effectively resolves traumatic memories without retraumatizing clients.   • Participation in therapy can be beneficial in a number of ways. The benefits obtained from therapy depend on the level of investment the clients have in the process, as well as their willingness to apply what they have learned. Through effective therapy, clients often find they:

Sessions typically last 55 minutes and address topics like communication, boundaries, and how individual challenges affect the family as a whole. Unlike individual therapy, family therapy looks at the broader family patterns contributing to issues. Ultimately, it’s shaped by the family’s unique needs.

  • Every family faces challenges, and seeking support when needed is a sign of strength. Family therapy offers a neutral perspective, helping identify patterns and issues that family members may not recognize. It provides valuable tools for improving communication, managing triggers, and overcoming obstacles. Whether dealing with ADHD, depression, anxiety, addiction, or trauma, therapy can help families navigate difficult situations and foster healing. If your family feels stuck or overwhelmed, family therapy can help create lasting positive change.

  • Medication can help manage symptoms of mental health disorders, but it doesn’t address the root cause. Like treating pain with medication before surgery, it may be necessary to combine medication with therapy for effective treatment. Therapy helps uncover and address the underlying issues, thereby supporting long-term healing. While doctors prescribe medications, therapists, who see clients more often, can spot side effects or interactions early. Therapy offers a lasting solution, helping clients achieve sustainable growth and overall well-being, beyond just symptom relief.
